Paul’s Thorn in the Flesh pt 2

PLEASE READ YESTERDAY’S BLOG FIRST TO UNDERSTAND TODAY’S.

So if Paul did not have an eye disease then why would the Galatians say they would pluck their eyes out if they could to help Paul?

So if Paul did not have sickness in his body why did he call it an infirmity in his body?

I am so glad you asked!!

Looking at context is very important when interpreting the Word of God.  Paul was on his missionary journey to Galatia when a horrible event happened to him.  In Acts 14:19-21, Then Jews from Antioch and Iconium came there; and having persuaded the multitudes, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be dead. 20However, when the disciples gathered around him, he rose up and went into the city. And the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.21And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch.

Paul had just got stoned (to death or close), and when he was raised up immediately went to Galatia (a region with 4 churches in it).  When they saw him he was a wreck!  Stones, literal stones were thrown at his head till he was dead!  That is why they saw the infirmity in his body in Galatia, that is why they would have plucked their eyes out (ever get hit in the face with a rock?).

So what is this THORN IN THE FLESH that Paul had if it was not a sickness or disease?

The verse describes itself – vs 7, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me.

Thorn in the flesh is seen only 2 other times in the Word (Num. 33:55, Judg. 2:3), and both times they were a personality, not a sickness.

It means exactly what it says.  It was a demon spirit buffeting (This means like a punching bag) him.  This terminology is seen other times in the Bible, and both times it is mentioned it is always a personality, not a thing.  Messenger – This is a personality, a literal demon spirit, not an eye disease.

A demon spirit had an assignment against him to destroy him, but Paul was not destroyed, he was an overcomer!

Infirmity – want of strength, weakness, infirmity of the body, its native weakness and frailty, feebleness of health or sickness of the soul.

So what were the infirmities?  If you go one chapter back (2 Cor. 11:22-30), Paul lists the infirmities, and not one of them is a sickness or disease.  It was horrible persecution for his stance with the Savior!

TODAY, KNOW THAT YOU CANNOT SEPARATE THE BLOOD AND BODY, AND THAT HEALING IS ALWAYS FOR YOU!!
