Can a Christian be POSSESSED by a Demon?

Mark 16:17a, These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name….

We established in yesterday’s post that the devil is a COUNTERFEITER!

Possession was not his idea – it was God the Father’s plan to come and live inside man!

1 Cor. 6:19,  Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself.

There are preachers in christiandom that teach that you can be possessed by Jesus, and by a demon at the same time.  THAT IS A LIE!

Here is a simple truth: GOD IS A BAD SHARER!  God will not share His house with a demonic spirit!

  • Mark 3:24-27, If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26And if Satan has risen up against himself, and is divided, he cannot stand, but has an end. 27No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house. NKJV
  • God is a jealous God – Ex. 34:15, You must worship no other gods, for the LORD, whose very name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about his relationship with you.
  • He is not going to live in you with a demon spirit!  A Christian CANNOT be possessed by a demon!

A Christian can be OPPRESSED by a demon!

Possession is living inside with ownership.

Oppression is a coming upon with with influence.

Here are a few demonic spirits that can oppress a Christian:

1. A spirit of fear – 2 Timothy 1:7, For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. NKJV

2. A spirit of infirmity – Luke 13:16, So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound—think of it—for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?”

3. A spirit of depression & suicide – The opposite of depression is joy, a fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:20-23).  Suicide is the desire of Satan (John 10:10)

The list can become large, but there is great news for a believer:

1. John 8:36, So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.

2. 1 John 4:4, But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.

3. Romans 8:37, No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

Jesus has set you free from any oppressive, controlling spirit that is striving to influence your life.  Take authority in the name of Jesus and tell it to get off, and to not return in JESUS’ NAME.  They know His name.  They recognize His name!  They fear His name!
