And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 They immediately left their nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
This statement at first sounds really easy, a simple thought, but let’s look at what this actually means.
Jesus literally walked up to these businessmen who were working their livelihood, and said, come now!
It wasn’t, “Hey guys, you want to come help me with the ministry?”
Jesus told them with clarity, and strength to COME NOW!
Many times in American Christianity we have the mindset that we are doing God a favor by coming to church, or helping in a ministry. That we are “following Him” because we do not want to go to the Lake of Fire. That would be a good reason, but we forget that Jesus is looking for relationship, but also for DISCIPLES.
Jesus has called us to follow Him, not for Him to follow us.
Romans 8:14 – These are the children of God who are led by the Spirit of God.
We are led by Him.
He is our leader.
He is our LORD; we are not our own lord, and Jesus is just the guy who keeps us from the Lake of Fire.
IMMEDIATELY – This means exactly that – they got right up and went.
Peter and Andrew left their business.
They did not abandon their business – we see Peter go back to his business after Jesus’ death.
They were successful business people, and their companies still ran while they followed Jesus.
John and James left their father sitting on the pier to follow Jesus.
You have to make decisions when you follow the Lord.
IS JESUS FIRST?
